EG3TM: The first single roller burnishing tool with bit change - fast, flexible, precise

Celle, 02.11.2026 (PresseBox) - Every second counts—especially in the mass production of small components. But when surface roughness of Rz = 1 µm is required, many manufacturers reach their limits. The solution? A tool that’s as easy to change as a cordless screwdriver bit—while taking precision and productivity to a whole new level.

ECOROLL AG Werkzeugtechnik presented a new tool concept for roller burnishing on machines with limited installation space at the AMB trade show in Stuttgart from September 15–19, 2026. The newly developed single-roll roller burnishing tool EG3TM is designed specifically for this application.

Roller Burnishing, also known as deep rolling, can generally achieve very good surface properties. The principle behind the process is simple: a rolling body is pressed against a surface. The contact pressure causes plastic deformation of the roughness peaks. These are reshaped, and the roughness valleys are raised. This produces a surface with Rz< 1 µm or Ra< 0.01 µm directly on the lathe, without any grinding process or material removal. In addition, the deformation strengthens the subsurface area, so that the components last even longer under dynamic loads. ECOROLL has been offering various tooling solutions for this process for many years; with the ECOcompact series, it also provides specialized tools for use in machine tools with limited installation space.

With the EG3TM, ECOROLL is expanding this tool series and introducing a tool designed for maximum flexibility and productivity. For users, the key is to reduce the downtime associated with replacing wear parts. With the EG3TM, this is as simple as changing a bit on a cordless screwdriver at home. A magnetic system allows the rolling head to be removed from the tool without any tools. A second new rolling head is inserted, and production can resume in under 10 seconds.

In addition, the tool features an integrated preload mechanism. This also eliminates process time, as the full rolling force of up to 1,000 N is applied to the roller after only a minimal feed of the tool. Conventional tools without a preload mechanism require a slow feed for up to 2 mm before the full rolling force is applied.

“But even highly flexible contract manufacturers benefit from our tool!” explains Dr. Karsten Röttger, CEO of ECOROLL AG, proudly during the trade show. This is because ECOROLL took the bit system mentioned earlier a step further and developed a variety of rolling heads. This makes it possible to process different workpiece geometries flexibly using a single tool and various rolling heads. In combination with different clamping systems or tool holders, a highly flexible and exceptionally productive tool was presented, one that will certainly be used in many different production settings in the future.
