Trenchless house connections using impact moles: the fast, minimally invasive solution
TRACTO’s GRUNDOMAT P+ combines a tried-and-tested concept with today’s jobsite requirements
Lennestadt, 07.10.2026 (PresseBox) - Ensuring the safe and sustainable supply of heating, electricity, water or telecommunications to buildings often presents major challenges for network operators and utility companies. House connections must be installed cost-effectively, quickly and with as little disruption to the existing infrastructure and residents as possible. This is particularly true at present for the provision of fibre-optic broadband (FTTH) or renewable energy as part of the energy transition. Pneumatic impact moles, also known as soil displacement hammers, offer a fast and cost-effective solution for installing pipes to the end user without the need for trenching. This significantly reduces the need to dig up front gardens and driveways, as well as minimising disruption to residents and traffic.
Precision is key
Impact moles are regarded as an all-purpose tool for the trenchless installation of house connections along straight routes using on the soil displacement method. When driving the GRUNDOMAT forward, the soil is displaced into the surrounding soil and compacted. Short pipes with smooth sleeves that do not protrude externally, and long plastic pipes with outer diameters ranging from 40 to 160 mm, or cables, can be pulled into the resulting earth ducts immediately or subsequently. Depending on the soil conditions, installation lengths of up to 25 metres are possible. As the machine is not steerable, the accuracy of the impact mole is of paramount importance for the success of the construction project.
The GRUNDOMAT soil displacement hammers from TRACTO are particularly renowned for their accuracy. The design principle, which utilises a 2-stroke propulsion system, and the robust construction have proven their worth over decades in the precise laying of pipes. The latest P+ generation combines this experience in development and application with the current demands of trenchless construction. To this end, relevant components have been specifically optimised.
Greater productivity through practical optimisations
“The GRUNDOMAT P+ is not an entirely new development, but rather the logical evolution of a tried-and-tested technology, taking into account today's and tomorrow's construction site conditions. “We have listened to feedback from the field and focused precisely on the areas where users expect the greatest benefit in day-to-day operation: reliability, ease of maintenance, and cost-effectiveness,” says David Imhof, Head of Product Management at TRACTO.
The development focused on improvements that simplify practical use on construction sites and enhance the durability of the soil displacement hammer. An optimised head seal protects the P+ more effectively against dirt ingress and helps to maintain drilling accuracy under demanding conditions. A guide bushing for the chisel enhances precision while reducing wear. Maintenance has also been made much easier: thanks to the service-friendly, screw-in front section of the housing, wear parts can be replaced more quickly, thereby reducing downtime.
“What matters is not just what a machine can do on paper, but how reliably it performs under real construction site conditions,” says Imhof. This is also confirmed by user Florian Duraku: 'TRACTO is a very important partner for us because the soil displacement hammers must work effectively in all ground conditions, whether gravelly, wet or muddy. In this respect, we have had the best experience with TRACTO.'
It’s all down to the head
Different ground conditions require different tools for installing underground infrastructure. This is particularly true of soil displacement hammers, for which precise design is essential. That is why, like its predecessor models, the GRUNDOMAT P+ is available with two different heads, each tailored to different conditions. The stepped head is a tried-and-tested solution for loose, displaceable soils. For hard and heavily compacted soils, the crowned head is the right choice. Its patented design is engineered for high performance, accuracy and reliability in these challenging conditions.
Short versions for particularly confined spaces
Not every construction site offers sufficient space for a standard solution. This is particularly true when it comes to property connections or work in inner-city areas, where the available space often determines whether trenchless installation can be carried out cost-effectively. The GRUNDOMAT XS was developed to meet these requirements where every centimetre counts. It complements the GRUNDOMAT P+ by providing an especially compact solution for trenchless installations that require minimal space. This allows for applications that were previously difficult or only feasible with considerable effort. Thanks to its compact design, the start and target pits can be smaller, reducing the workload on and around the construction site further.
Tailored solutions for domestic connections
The wide range of variants available for the GRUNDOMAT P+ allows the machine configuration to be tailored specifically to the task at hand. The portfolio is complemented by an extensive range of accessories for various installation methods, from immediate pipework installation to subsequent pipe pulling. A precise understanding of customers’ specific applications and requirements is a key factor in the selection and further development of these solutions.
“Only by fully understanding our customers’ specific applications can we provide the right solution and, at the same time, identify which new solutions the market will need in the future,” explains David Imhof.
This ensures that machines and accessories are optimally matched, helping to guarantee that service connections are installed quickly, safely, cost-effectively and efficiently.
Comprehensive support and training
As a system provider of trenchless installation technology (NODIG), TRACTO offers the right technology and supports customers with a range of additional services. During demonstrations, users can familiarise themselves with the soil displacement method. Tailor-made financing solutions simplify investment planning, while trainings teach users how to handle the GRUNDOMAT impact mole and its accessories safely and professionally. Users can choose between training courses at TRACTO's premises or at their own construction sites. The latter option is particularly helpful when several teams need to be trained in the use of the equipment under real construction site conditions, for example for routine service connection installation. After purchase, customers also benefit from reliable after-sales service. This creates a holistic approach geared towards the success of construction projects.
