Dear Readers,
New opportunities are emerging in previously developed mining areas. Historic deposits are coming back into focus because modern exploration methods provide additional insights, and existing infrastructure can facilitate development work. Whether a restart proves economically viable, however, depends on the specific deposits, costs, and permits.
For copper in particular, long-term demand from power grids, electrification, and industry plays a key role. Existing shafts, roads, and utility connections can offer advantages over entirely new projects. However, old facilities often need to be technically modernized and brought up to current environmental and safety standards.
A similar logic applies to gold projects: Past production provides evidence of historical mining activity but does not replace a current feasibility study. Metal prices, ore grades, and investment requirements determine the project’s prospects. Projects in which companies combine new studies with verifiable development milestones are therefore particularly interesting.
Sibanye-Stillwater is preparing Mount Lyell
Sibanye-Stillwater - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/sibanye-stillwater-ltd/ - received board approval in the third quarter of 2026 to proceed with the development of the historic Mount Lyell copper-gold project in Tasmania. According to the company, the project has a life of approximately 23 years; the mine has not yet resumed commercial production.
The company’s plans call for annual production of approximately 26,000 metric tons of copper, 16,000 ounces of gold, and 116,000 ounces of silver once operations are underway. Project implementation is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027, with initial metal production expected in early 2029.
OR Royalties Receives Proceeds from Bralorne
OR Royalties - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/or-royalties-inc/ - holds a 1.7 percent net smelter return royalty on the historic Bralorne gold project in British Columbia. The operator is Talisker Resources. This contractual revenue share does not constitute an ownership interest in the mine. According to the company, OR Royalties received its first royalty payment in April 2025.
According to the company’s September 2026 announcement, approximately 4,900 ounces of gold were extracted from 19,014 metric tons of mined material at Bralorne through the end of August. OR Royalties also reported preliminary figures of 20,237 attributable gold-equivalent ounces from its entire royalty and streaming business for the third quarter of 2026.
Conclusion: OR Royalties and Sibanye-Stillwater Approach Milestones
Historic deposits can open up new development opportunities under the right market conditions. At Sibanye-Stillwater, the focus is on the development of Mount Lyell and the planned start of production; at OR Royalties, the focus is on the further development of the royalty portfolio, including Bralorne.
