Again Breaking News from NIH for biomedical research
Waldkirch, 09.06.2026 (PresseBox) - The U.S. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced an investment of more than $150 million to advance human‑based research methods and reduce reliance on animal models.
This funding represents the first awards under the Complement Animal Research in Experimentation (Complement‑ARIE) program, focused on developing, validating, and standardizing new approach methodologies (NAMs) — including advanced in vitro and computational models that better reflect human biology.
Key elements of the initiative include:
Establishment of Technology Development Centers to accelerate NAM development
A NAMs data hub and coordinating center to support data sharing and standards
A validation and qualification network to enable regulatory acceptance through public‑private collaboration
Initial pilot projects in areas such as inhalation toxicity, developmental neurotoxicity, and rare diseases
This investment sends a strong signal that human‑relevant, animal‑free research approaches are moving from innovation toward broad implementation.
