- "Made in Germany" also for product design

The outstanding product design of the Demag V-type crane has now also been recognized in the USA: the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) has recognized the crane girder as part of its International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). The V-type crane was awarded Silver as one of the "top winners" in the Commercial & Industrial Products category.

The jury evaluated a total of 1,700 entries. Matthew Marzynski from the University of Washington and Jury Chair explains: "When we look at a design, we're not just looking at what's trendy or fashionable at the moment. We have the context of that history of that long line of designers that came before us."

Following the iF Design Award, Red Dot Award and other awards, the patented crane continues this success story and has now received another design award this year. Andreas Hambrock, Head of Universal Cranes Business Line at Terex Material Handling, explains: "It is really great that the product design of our Demag V-type crane has been recognized at this level. And the fact that we have now also won an American design award proves that products which are 'Made in Germany' can also compete in the design arena." Characteristic for the crane girder is its V-shaped design with vertical and diagonal struts as well as tapered diaphragm joints. The development engineers utilized bionic principles and based their design on bone structure, which only uses material where it is actually needed.

The construction of the V-type crane offers considerable technical benefits compared to conventional cranes that have enclosed box-section girders or I-beam girders. Its innovative design reduces oscillation frequency by 30 percent, cuts its weight by an average of 17 percent and doubles its service life to more than 500,000 changes of load. The new girder concept offers significantly improved efficiency for handling loads and higher handling rates.
