Monheim am Rhein, 29.07.2014 (PresseBox) - After an extensive EU tendering and user evaluation process by ORF (Austria's public broadcaster), Thum + Mahr was awarded with a 3 years contract to refurbish all 8 ORF regional radio stations with DHD mixing and routing systems.

The project is staged into 3 phases. Phase 1 was the refurbishment of 3 of ORF ́s local stations of the "Südschiene" (southern region) during 2012. ORF Steiermark" at Graz was the first ORF local Radio station which went On Air in August 2012 with the new DHD systems. Phase1 was handed over to ORF by begin of 2013. The project will be finished by end of phase 3 in December 2014.

In total Thum+Mahr will deliver 24 DHD series 52 mixing systems and more than 50 small DHD 52 DX desktop mixers for workshops, small editing rooms and News studios. The typical setup of each ORF local Radio station has two fully integrated DHD Series 52 mixing desks, one Self-Op DJ Studio and one Production type RP1 Studio which acts also as backup for the main DJ studio.

The control surfaces of ORF ́s new mixing desks have been designed on DHD ́s fully Modular Mixing Console series 52/MX. The advantage of single strip modules allows Thum + Mahr to design the control surface in a semi-circular layout with 18 faders to fit ORF's specific user requirements.

The production style RP1 studios are equipped with 24 faders and have additional overbridge modules for more direct in channel control capabilities and additional TFT touch screens for channel metering and extended control features as in Chanel EQ / Dynamic setting or AUX settings.

At the heart of each DHD mixing desk ORF have chosen DHD ́s 52/XD core, which is the most powerful DHD core, offering a 8k x 8k embedded audio routing matrix. The DHD 52 XD Core has a very small form factor of 1 U 19" and an ultra-low power consumption of only 20W.

The integrated scalable DSP processing unit of the 52XD Core can calculate in parallel up to 64 faders on 4 layers, 48 stereo summing busses for PGM, AUX, mix minus and PFL busses as well as up to 30 mix minus busses and up to 4 virtual mixers.
The 52XD core is processing also all in channel DSP functionality as EQ, Dynamic and handles monitoring and talkback functionality for DJs and guests as well.

On top ORF are using in each local Radio station up to 15 of DHD ́s 52/DX small desktop mixers as replacement for all workshops, small editing rooms and as news presenting mixers. Also the smallest DHD mixer is fully integrated into DHD ́s audio and control network by use of DHD ́s APC network links based on CAT5 connections
